Proofreading Cover Letter Template
A cover letter for proofreading work is doing something unusual: it is a sample of the exact skill being hired. A typo in it is not an unlucky blemish, it is a demonstration, and every agency in this trade will tell you it is the fastest filter they have. This structures one that survives that reading.
See the coursesEverything on this page is yours to copy and adapt. The courses cover the decisions behind it: what to charge, what to promise, and what to put in writing.
What yours needs to cover
- ✓ An opening that names the specific work you are applying for, not "any opportunities"
- ✓ A relevance paragraph tied to what this recipient actually publishes
- ✓ A competence paragraph that shows the work rather than asserting quality
- ✓ A clear statement of your scope: what you do, and what you do not
- ✓ Availability and capacity in words a scheduler can act on
- ✓ A short, specific close with one next step
- ✓ A note on what to attach, and what never to attach
How to use it
- Read what the recipient publishes before writing a word, and name it specifically.
- Say what you do and do not do, because a scheduler needs to slot you somewhere.
- Offer a short test edit rather than claiming accuracy, since the claim is unverifiable and the offer is not.
- Then proofread it three times, on paper, and again the next morning.
Proofreading Cover Letter Template FAQs
What should I attach?
A short CV and, where you have permission, one sample edit showing tracked changes. Never attach client work you do not have explicit permission to show, even anonymised. Confidentiality is a selling point in this trade and breaching it to win work advertises exactly the wrong thing.
What if I have no experience?
Then lead with the test edit rather than with history. A sample of what you can do now is worth more to an agency than a list of what you have done, which is the unusual advantage of a trade that hires on demonstrated skill and not on credentials.
How long should it be?
Short enough to read in under a minute. The recipient is assessing your judgment as much as your writing, and length that is not earned is itself a signal.
